Bill Filed to Increase Recess in Arkansas

State Rep. Jana Della Rosa has filed legislation to increase recess for all elementary students in Arkansas public schools. 40 minutes would have to be allotted which is a substantial increase from the current 18 minutes.

Parents for Active Learning issued a press release which was then posted online by Arkansas Times. In November, the group approached the Arkansas House and Senate Education Committees with concerns about the lack of playtime for public school children.

As outlined in the press release, both the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that students receive an hour of unstructured play time each day. Recess is important for development as it encourages healthy habits and socialization.

Currently, Arkansas ranks seventh in national childhood obesity.
