City officials in Harrison, Arkansas voted to raise the age to purchase tobacco to 21. This ordinance will go into effect in January, 2019.
The initiative was pushed by a group of Harrison high school students, organized as ‘Ignite’. The students presented concern over tobacco use among their classmates to city officials.
The organization is supported by Boone County Substance Abuse Coalition as well as the North Arkansas Partnership for Health Education.
Harrison follows Helena-West which passed a Tobacco 21 ordinance in 2016. Looking forward, Mountain Home is the next city to consider the ordinance.
Nearly 14 percent of high school students in Arkansas use tobacco products, according to the American Heart Association.
