In this year’s general election, every Arkansan can cast their ballot for state treasurer, chief justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court and a representative for their congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Whether Arkansans can vote for candidates to represent their district in the Arkansas Legislature depends on if there’s a contested race in their area.
The Arkansas Legislature is comprised of the Senate and the House. There are 35 senators who generally serve staggered four-year terms, while the House has 100 members who are all up for election every two years.
Some races were decided long before November because only one candidate filed for a seat (9 in the Senate and 39 in the House). Other candidates won their party’s primary in the spring and face no opposition from another party this fall (2 in the Senate and 7 in the House).
This election cycle there are 61 contested races in the Arkansas Legislature — 7 in the Senate and 54 in the House.
