Op-Ed: Politicians Should Repent and Apologize

By Charles R. Fuqua, J.D.

When James and John came to Jesus and ask that when He came into His kingdom that they be allowed to sit at His right- and left-hand Jesus was not happy. He told them that it did not work that way in His kingdom. He said that in His kingdom that whoever wanted to be great would be the servant of all. Jesus then demonstrated that principle by willfully giving up His life for the wrongs of others. In the Lord’s prayer we pray “Thy kingdom come”. If we really want God’s kingdom to come, we should be living as servants to others. One of the central teachings of the reformer Martin Luther was that each of us in our chosen occupation should serve others in that occupation. This was also taught by John Calvin and became known as the Protestant work ethic. This has been one of the foundational principles of Western Civilization.

If this principle is true for all occupations, how much more should it be true for those who hold positions of authority. Elected officials should consider themselves servants of those who have elected them. In reality the way this works is that politicians are the servants of those who have contributed the most to their political campaigns and will contribute the most to their re-election. It should not be this way. Politicians owe service to the great and the small.

Every elected person should look back on his or her record and reflect on this principle. The people will show great respect for those who can admit their wrongs and mistakes. All the elected officials that claim to be Christians should hold a higher allegiance to Christ and service to others then to money and power. Every elected official from President down should reflect back on his or her decisions and honestly consider why the decision was made. If a decision was made as a matter of political compromise or expedience, an apology is in order.

If the people started seeing their leaders repent and apologize it would bring a great change to our nation. Please forward this to all your elected officials. It will be informative to see who is strong enough to confess their shortcomings.
