Lonoke Co. Sheriff Hopeful Campaigns While Awaiting Trial, Pledges Systemic Reforms

The race for Lonoke County sheriff continues to draw attention as candidate Aaron Spencer campaigns while awaiting trial on a second-degree murder charge tied to a 2024 shooting involving his missing daughter. In an interview with Conduit News, Spencer said he cannot discuss the pending case in detail but argued the proceedings have lacked transparency, noting a March hearing to set a new trial date and encouraging the public to attend court.

Spencer told Conduit his campaign is driven by what he described as broader “systemic” problems in county law enforcement and the justice system, including jail conditions, leadership accountability, and public access to the sheriff’s office. He criticized the department’s transparency practices — from a locked front entrance to limited public engagement — and said restoring trust would be a first-day priority.

He also pointed to budget and staffing concerns, claiming the sheriff’s budget has grown sharply in recent years while, in his view, resources have not been effectively deployed for recruitment, pay, and training. Spencer proposed creating a “SAFE unit” focused on sexual assault, family endangerment, and child-related crimes, including a victim liaison to improve communication with prosecutors and connect families to services.

Spencer said early voting turnout suggests voters are “ready for change” and urged residents to get involved ahead of Election Day on March 3.
