Ban on Sanctuary Cities in Arkansas Fails in House After Passing Senate

A proposed ban on Sanctuary Cities in Arkansas failed in a House Committee after Gov. Asa Hutchinson stated that he wanted to see measures which would prevent racial profiling. The ban had already passed the Arkansas Senate and would have preemptively set parameters in place to defund any Arkansas city which passed public policies not compliant with federal immigration laws.

The House Committee voted 9-4 in opposition of the ban. 11 votes were needed for the ban to go before the full Arkansas House.

The attorney general would have held power to decide which cities are sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants. Texas passed similar legislation over two years ago. The bill had passed 24-5 in the Arkansas Senate.
