Communist Propaganda in Arkansas

Confucius Institutes in the News

Last week the U.S. Senate passed a bill to clamp down on communist China’s propaganda arm at American universities. The program is called Confucius Institute and one has been operating in Arkansas for many years.

The vote in the U.S. Senate was unanimous! When is the last time you saw Democrat and Republican U.S. Senators agree on anything?

“Confucius Institutes are under the control of the Chinese Communist Party in all but name,” [Sen. John Kennedy, R-La] said in a statement Thursday. “They are propaganda centers that threaten academic liberty and free speech without shame, and too many American schools are falling victim to the political con every day.”

If passed by the House and signed into law by President Biden, the measure would cut federal funding from universities that host Confucius Institutes unless they regulate all teaching staff hired for the cultural centers and oversee the curriculum.

The bill also calls for the banning of any “foreign law on any campus” and the protection of “academic freedom” at U.S. universities.[i]

Last year Conduit News reported on the Confucius Institute at the University of Central Arkansas. UCA still advertises the communist China sponsored program on its website.

We reported on the program after then United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo specifically warned a meeting of state governors about the program. The FBI and other agencies had long warned about the program and some colleges had shut theirs down.

Pompeo’s speech also included warnings about communist China trying to get business ties with state and local governments to use as leverage to influence American foreign policy.  Governor Asa Hutchinson’s law firm represents some communist China businesses and he has approved aid to communist Chinese companies as incentives to locate a facility in Arkansas.

Earlier this year state Senator Trent Garner introduced SB252 to prohibit the Arkansas Economic Development Commission from maintaining an office in China. The bill never got out of committee.
