Michael Cohen, former lawyer to President Trump, has been sentenced to 36 months in prison. Cohen plead guilty to campaign finance violations, tax evasion, and lying to Congress.
Cohen is the first within close proximity to President Trump to be jailed, following the special counsel’s inquiry into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
Despite formerly stating that he would take a bullet for the President, Cohen told the Judge that the President led him to “follow a path of darkness rather than light”. In addition, he stated that his “weakness was blind loyalty to Donald Trump”.
The Southern District of New York and Special Counsel Robert Mueller brought two separate cases against Cohen, resulting in the sentencing.
