The AR LEARNS Act Passes the House of Representatives

SB294 now heads to Senate Edu Committee

It was an eventful week at the state capitol as Governor Sanders’ education plan swiftly passed through the House Education Committee and then the House Floor.

SB294, sponsored by Sen. Breanne Davis and Rep. Keith Brooks, was heard in the House Education Committee Tuesday. The bill was introduced by Rep. Brooks and Secretary of Education Jacob Oliva. After nearly four hours of questions from committee members, Chair Brian Evans said the committee would come back that afternoon to hear public testimony once the House adjourned.

Committee members heard over seven hours of public testimony from educators, administrators, parents, as well as concerned citizens. On Wednesday, SB294 passed out of the House Education Committee by a voice vote. It then was heard by the entire House of Representatives on Thursday. The bill passed with the emergency clause by a vote of 78-21-1 present.

SB294 goes back to the Senate Education Committee to concur its amendment on Monday, March 6.
