Closed Primaries on Republican Committee Agenda

By Conduit For Action

The State Committee of the Republican Party of Arkansas meets on August 19th in North Little Rock. We already mentioned the important resolution calling for candidates for judicial races to be allowed to run as political party candidates. There is another important issue on the agenda.

The Republican State Committee will also be considering a resolution calling for closed primaries. A closed primary would mean to vote in the Republican primary you must register as a Republican.  The resolution is extremely important because Democrats have been urging Democrat voters to cross over to vote for weaker candidates in the Republican primary.

This happened in Arkansas during the 2022 primary election. Democrats openly encouraged their voters to cross over and vote in the Republican primary. In most areas of Arkansas, Democrats are not going to win elections; so it was easy for Democrats to meddle in the Republican primary.

In 2022, Democrat interference in Republican primaries  wasn’t limited to just Arkansas. In Arizona the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee poured in money to a Republican congressional race to support the Republican candidate who Democrats thought they had a better chance to beat in the general election.[i] Democrats spent millions of dollars in other states to influence who won in Republican primaries, as well. Fox News reported Democrats spent more than $40 million in six Republican primaries for congressional seats and the strategy paid off as the Democrats got the opponents they wanted in the general election.[ii]

Democrats in other states crossed over and voted in Republican primaries. “Reports from Georgia and Colorado suggest that an increasing number of strongly partisan and highly strategic voters are using open primary systems to attempt to sabotage a particularly distasteful opponent. Political scientists call this ‘strategic crossover voting.’” – Washington Post[iii]

Because of the new Democrat tactics to undermine Republican primaries, you might think the resolution to have closed primaries would easily pass. Unfortunately, some people who run as Republicans do not support the Republican platform and want Democrats and liberal Independents to cross over and vote for them.

The Republican State Committee meets Saturday, August 19. So the time is short for you to get the word out about this important resolution.
